Abstract
Young larvae of the wood cricket N. sylvestris (Bosc) (Orthoptera Gryllidae) display negative phototaxis. This photonegativity appears in nature even when terrestrial landmarks, such as a forest border, are available. It is suggested that this basic escape reaction toward the opposite of the sun azimuth constitutes a 1st step in building the astroorientation behavior exhibited by this species only in favorable ecological conditions.
