Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of the latero-frontal tracts on the gills of Nucula sulcata, Ostrea edulis and Chlamys varia indicate that 2 types of structure are involved: compound eu-latero-frontal cirri and pro-latero-frontal cilia. The morphological and physiological significance of these structures is given.
