Genetic analysis of chromosome 2 d of wheat i. the location of genes affecting height day length insensitivity hybrid dwarfism and yellow rust resistance

Homozygous parental and recombinant chromosome lines were derived from the cross between the wheat variety 'Cappelle-Desprez' and a substitution line in which the 2D chromosome of 'Cappelle-Desprez' had been replaced by its homologue from the semi-dwarf variety 'Mara'. A study of these lines identified a number of single genes, Rht8 for height, Ppd1 for day-length insensitivity, Yr16 for adult-plant resistance to yellow-rust (Puccinia striiformis), and D4 for hybrid dwarfish. A genetic map showing the position of these genes was constructed. Comparisons made between this and the known genetic map of chromosome 2D suggest that Ppd1, Yr16, and D4 were homoeoallelic to Ppd2, Yr5/Yr7 and D2 on 2B. A probable effect of Ppd1 on height and adult plant resistance to yellow-rust was observed.
