Genetic architecture of ginning characters in upland cotton gossypium hirsutum

A 10 .times. 10 diallel set of F2 progenies in upland cotton was studied for ginning outturn, lint index and seed index. Both additive and non-additive effects were important for the genetic control of ginning characters. Dominance was in the direction of higher ginning outturn and lint index. Over-dominance was noted for ginning outturn and lint index, while complete dominance was observed for seed index. Reciprocal recurrent selection scheme was suggested for exploiting all types of genetic variability especially in the presence of over-dominance type of gene effects.
