The rate of homoeotic transformation of antennae and halters was studied in the course of plus and minus selection in Ns and bx stocks, respectively (2 selected and 1 unselected series of each of the stocks), as well as in Ns bx stock (4 selected and 1 unselected series). The selection was practically ineffective in simple Ns and bx stocks. The distinct shift was observed in combined Ns bx stock. In the latter case, parallel selection for the rate of transformation of both antennae and halters was more effective than antiparallel one, as far as antennae transformation was concerned, but the effectiveness of selection for the rate of halters transformation was independent of the direction of selection for the rate of antennae transformation. The activity of Ns gene in dorsal metathoracic disc and the existence of common modifiers of Ns and bx are suggested.
