Comprehensive data on linkage relationships among the 6 equine blood group loci A, C, D, K, P and Q, and the structural loci controlling the 3 serum proteins albumin (Al), esterase (Es), transferrin (Tf), and 6 red cell proteins acid phosphatase (AP), carbonic anhydrase (CA), Hb (Hb), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGD), phosphoglucomutase (PGM) and phosphohexose isomerase (PHI) and sex are reported. The study is based on the examination of paternal half-sib groups. Evidence is presented that the serum esterase locus is linked to the serum albumin locus and thus belongs to the equine linkage group (LG) II. Additional data on the previously described linkage between K and PGD are reported. The male recombination fraction of the Al:Es linkage was estimated at 0.366 .+-. 0.007 and of the K:PGD linkage at 0.258 .+-. 0.008. Significant heterogeneity of recombination fractions among sires was observed for the K:PGD linkage. The results were compared with linkage information from other vertebrate species, in view of the concept of linkage homology. The fact that equine LG II comprises no less than 7 loci, although only about 25 autosomal loci altogether were subjected to linkage studies in the horse, was discussed in the light of similar observations made in other species.
