Genetic regulation of tomato fruit ripening

Hortscience 13(5): 508-513

Ripening characteristics of Lycopersicon esculentum fruits of the Nr, rin and nor mutants are compared. All mutants have multiple effects on ripening in contrast to the many ripening mutants which only influence carotene synthesis. The physiological characteristics of the mutants are compared (respiratory climacteric, polygalacturonase activity, pectinesterase activity, carotenoid content, shelf life, pH, titratable acids, soluble solids). Genetic effects of the mutants and practical implications of these mutants in prolonging shelf life are discussed.
