Genetic study on disease resistance for rice cultivar of dan 209 released from anther culture

The variety Dan 209 (Japonica) was developed from a pollen plant of the back cross (IR26 .times. Nonghu62) in 1977. The results of genetic study show that its resistances to rice blast and bacterial leaf blight are controlled respectively by different genes, transferred from the nonrecurrent Indica parent IR26. All the known cases of materials carrying the Xa4a gene resistant to bacterial leaf blight are found to belong to the Hsie rice (indica). Thus, Dan 209 may be the first Keng rice (Japonica) carrying this resistant gene. It has already been used widely as a resistant parent in the Keng rice breeding program.
