Combined analysis of variance for the yield of the 9 peanut genotypes common in the national trials conducted over 8 locations and 3 yr (1979-1981) revealed that environments, genotypes and genotype .times. environment mean squares were all significant at 0.01 level of probability. All genotypes were found adapted to lower yielding or poor environments. Under this environment, only 7 could be considered stable, Acc. 12 being the most stable based on the use of the coefficient of determination (r2) stability parameter. Seasonal differences in yield among all the genotypes existed between the wet and dry seasons. Hence for purposes of cultivar recommendation, a specific cultivar should be recommended for a particular season. Based on the calculated maximum genetic progress, an efficient allocation of resources for ecologic testing for peanuts should involve 25 genotypes, 3 replications, 8 different locations in the country and 3 seasons of testing.
