Geographic variation of mono terpenes in cortical oleo resin of loblolly pine pinus taeda

Geographic variation of mono terpenes in cortical oleo resin of loblolly pine pinus taeda

Monoterpene composition of cortical oleoresin was determined for 2724 planted trees originating from areas throughout the range of loblolly pine. Major constituents were .alpha.-pinene, .beta.-pinene myrcene, limonene and .beta.-phellandrene. Content of .alpha.-pinene, myrcene and limonene showed strong clinal trends although, with some interruptions, in an east to west direction. .beta.-Phellandrene showed a definite disjunction.sbd.all trees west of the Mississippi River [USA] had high .beta.-phellandrene. .beta.-pinene showed the least variation, with no distinct geographic pattern. Some indications of a relationship between monoterpene composition and fusiform rust [Cronartium fusiforme] infection were found. Content of limonene was related to some seed traits. The geographic variation in monoterpenes, together with supplemental data on seed traits reproduced here, allows judgement of the geographic origin of seed used in plantations, and could be used to certify seed from seed orchards.
