Germination of maize hybrid seeds depending on their pre sowing treatment and on temperature

Seed germination of the maize hybrids Knezha 611 and H-708 sown in Fusarium infected soil at controlled temperature in the phytotron of the "Dobroudzha" Wheat and Sunflower Institute, General Toshevo, was studied during the period sowing-emergence. Seed germination varied mainly in relation with the conditions of temperature, disinfection, hydrophobization and the seed fraction after a sum of effective temperature (above had been accumulated. Seed TMTD disinfection and hydrophobization by different technologies ensured proper protection of the seeds and sprouts from soil pathogens both at favourable and unfavourable temperatures during the period sowing-emergence. Hydrophobized seeds of the hybrids Knezha 611 and H-708, germinating at slowly rising soil temperature and repeated cold spells did not differ significantly in percentage of emerged plants from the TMTD disinfected seeds. Insignificant differences in germination were observed between the seed fractions studied so that no evaluation of their sowing qualities could be made.
