Gonadal endocrine function in male silver foxes with different genetically determined forms of defensive behavior

The peripheral plasma testosterone content and the in vitro production of the hormone by testicles of male silver foxes, selected according to the domesticating behavioral effect (tame), did not differ from those of wild animals [Vulpes saphena] in all seasons of the year except spring. In March and April (the time of the reproduction termination) the plasma testosterone level and its in vitro production by testicles of tame [V. fulva] males were significantly lower than in wild animals, which is indicative of a more pronounced diminishing of testicular testosterone-producing function, in the limits of the reproductive season, in the former animals than in the latter. The fact of a shortened season of mating in domesticated males in comparison with nondomesticated ones is evidently associated.
