Growing process of loblolly pine pinus taeda and slash pine pinus elliottii var elliottii planted in the shikoku region japan 1. height growth and preparation of the volume tables for standing trees

Bulletin for the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute 313: 1-36

Loblolly pine and slash pine growth was studied as they are desirable species for short rotation forest management in the Shikoku Region. Survival rates of planted seedlings are given. The percentage for slash pine was 73% in Enzan and 71% in Matsunokawa-yama. The survival rate for loblolly pine was 91%, higher than that of slash pine and depended mainly upon differences in seedling vitality. The survival rate for both pines would be more than 90%, if planting is done very carefully. Brush cutting should be done twice during the first 2 growing seasons after the seedlings. Standing tree volumes for both pines were provided.
