Growing zostera capricorni in tanks

Z. capricorni Aschers. was successfully grown in experimental tanks for 3 1/2 mo. Growth was severly suppressed during shading caused by epiphytic algae. These algae were controlled by excluding light from the tanks for 3 days whenever the epiphytes built up. Grazing on the Zostera leaves was observed by the gammarid amphipod Cymadusa sp. (Amphipoda: Amphithoidae), and this markedly affected production as measured by leaf biomass. The amphipod could be controlled by introducing a predator (sand whiting Sillago maculata Quoy and Gaimard) into the tanks.
