Abstract
Growth and total biomass of 2-yr-old loblolly pine were seriously suppressed by continuous flooding compared to dormant season flooding or drainage to a depth of 61 cm. Dormant season flooding produced larger seedlings than did maintaining the water table at 61 cm. P added at 100 mg kg-1 to the surface 15 cm of topsoil increased total biomass with continuous flooding but not with other drainage treatments. Content of N, P, K, Ca and Mg were closely associated with total seedling biomass. Sodium, Zn and Fe concentrations were greater in roots than foliage of seedlings. Loblolly pine required higher soil P with excessive water; P is able to at least partly alleviate the need for drainage.
