Growth suppressant chemicals for establishment of winter annual forages on bahia grass paspalum notatum cultivar pensacola and bermuda grass cynodon dactylon cultivar coastal sods

Sod-seeding 'Wrens Abruzzi' rye[Secale cereale]-'Gulf' ryegrass[Lolium multiflorum]-'Yuchi' arrowleaf clover [Trifolium vesiculosum] increased Dec.-April yields by 3000 lb dry forage on bahia grass and over 4000 lb on bermuda grass at the Lower Coastal Plain Substation [Alabama, USA]. Rye production during Nov.-Feb. was almost doubled by application of Roundup to bahia grass sod. There was no difference among Roundup rates of 1/4, 1/2, and 1 lb/acre. Paraquat had no effect on forage yield. Niether chemical enhanced rye production on Bermuda grass. Broadcast seeing 'Gulf' ryegrass-'Yuchi' arrowleaf clover increased Dec.-Arpil yields by about 3000 lb dry forage on bahia grass 3600 lb on Bermuda grass at the Lower Coastal Plain Substation. Ryegrass production during Feb.-March was almost doubled by application of Roundup to bahia grass sod. There was no difference among Roundup rates of 1/4, 1/2 and 1 lb/acre. Paraquat had no effect. Roundup and Paraquat increased ryegrass Feb.-March production 1 of 2 yr on Bermuda grass. Rye production during Nov.-March was more than doubled by application of Roundup to bahia grass sod at the Wiregrass Substation. Yuchi arrowleaf clover production was generally improved by Roundup treatment of sod. Roundup decreased summer production of bahia grass by 1000-1500 lb/acre but had no effect on Bermuda grass. Sod-seeding rye-ryegrass-arrowleaf clover or ryegrass-arrowleaf clover in Sept. on bahia or Bermuda grass sod is an effective way to extend the productive season of a pasture and improve forage quality. Application of Roundup offers the opportunity to reduce competition and substantially increase winter forage production on bahia grass but not Bermuda grass sod.
