Histo morphological and histochemical studies of placentome and expelled fetal membranes of buffalo bubalus bubalis

Samples of placentomes from 5 buffalo and those of fetal cotyledons from 25 normally expelled fetal membranes were studied for their histomorphology and certain histochemical aspects. Trophoblast was composed of cuboidal uninucleate, binucleate and giant cells. The cryptal epithelium was flattened. In the secondary and tertiary branchings, the epithelium changed to cuboidal type. At the base of the main chorionic villi, the trophoblast presented pseudostratification. A positive reaction for glycogen, Ca, Fe, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase was recorded in the placentomes. Weak sudanophilia was observed in some cryptal cells. Naturally expelled fetal membranes were morphologically and histochemically similar except for partial erosion of trophoblastic cells and the absence of sudanophilia.
