Abstract
Histological and certain histochemical studies were made on thyroid glands of 10 male buffalo calves and 10 adult female buffaloes. The capsule was formed by 2 layers of connective tissue and a layer of adipose tissue in between them. The larger follicles were present in the deeper zone of the gland. When the follicles were cut tangentially, they appeared as a clump or aggregation of cells. The follicles were lined by follicular cells and light cells. The presence of terminal bars, mitotic cell division and degenerative follicular cells in the epithelium were also observed. Solitary ganglionic cells were observed in the stroma. Follicular cells and colloid were positive for PAS [periodic acid Schiff], acid mucopolysaccharides, glycogen, protein, tyrosine and protein bound NH2 but they were negative for lipid and Ca. Measurements of the thickness of capsule, follicular diameter and the height and width of follicular cells are recorded.
