Histological and histochemical studies of the mandibular gland of a fresh water crab P. masoniana were carried out. The disposition of various cell types is discussed. The distribution of enzymes like alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, 5'-nucleotidase, ATP and non specific esterase amongst the different constituents of this gland was determined with special reference to their metabolic significance. The possible roles of various phosphatases and non specific esterase are speculated on with reference to mandibular gland function.
