Histological findings in renal osteopathy under a therapy of protein restricted diet and vitamin d in high dosage

Histological findings in renal osteopathy under a therapy of protein restricted diet and vitamin d in high dosage

Deutsche Gesundheitswesen 37(3): 115-118

A total of 191 bone biopsies were carried out in 88 patients with renal failure who were treated with protein-restricted diet and in 56 patients with slight renal insufficiency and without dietary restrictions. Long-term prophylaxis with vitamin D over a minimum period of 6 mo. was used for all patients in the 1st group but for only 16 patients in the 2nd group. A protein-reduced diet evidently does not have a detrimental influence on bone status and early high-dosage prophylaxis with vitamin D may be a promising means for preventing or improving renal osteopathy.
