In a preliminary study of the effects of anticancer drugs on human gastric cancer, the author studied the anticancer-drug (5FU or FT207)-induced ultrastructural changes in the epithelial cells of the stomach and small intestine of rats and compared these changes with the damage induced by ischemia. The changes caused by ischemia were: coarse nucleolemma, agglutination of chromatin with chromatin free spots in the nucleus, swelling of mitochondria and dilatation of rough endoplasmic reticulum (r-ER) in the cytoplasm. The changes caused by administration of anticancer drug were: clear nucleolemma, agglutination of chromatin, coarse nodular degradation of nucleolar filaments, swelling of mitochondria, dilatation of r-ER, a decrease in ribosomes and appearance of secondary lysosomes. Several ultrastructural differences between the two groups were noted. In the anticancer drug administration group, changes of nucleolar filaments were peculiar, a decrease in ribosomes was prominent and the appearance of secondary lysosomes was characteristic, while no qualitative changes in nucleolar filaments, nor decrease in ribosomes and marked dilatation of r-ER were seen in the ischemic group.
