Serological reactions in human schistosomiasis due to S. mansoni (22 cases), S. haematobium (14 cases) and S. japonicum (9 cases) were studied by ELISA [enzyme linked immunosorbent assay] using antigenic extracts from adults or eggs of S. mansoni and S. haematobium and by indirect immunofluorescence (on frozen sections of adult S. mansoni and S. haematobium) and by indirect immunofluorescence (on frozen sections of adult S. mansoni and S. haematobium) and by indirect hemagglutination (antigens extracted from adult S. mansoni). The specificity of the ELISA test was studied on 68 hetero-specific sera, and was 95% using homologous antigens, particularly the egg antigens. Data obtained in the ELISA test were comparable with those from the other tests. In 2 cases of intestinal schistosomiasis treated with oxamniquine, the post-treatment serological evolution was followed in the 3 tests. A higher and possibly earlier post-treatment peak was obtained with ELISA than with the immunofluorescence test.
