Humus balance of soddy podzolic soils in vologda oblast russian sfsr ussr

Humus balance of soddy podzolic soils in vologda oblast russian sfsr ussr

Izvestiya Timiryazevskoi Sel'skokhozyaistvennoi Akademii (1): 59-63

Under intensive agriculture in the Vologodsky region, organic fertilizers are the major input in the humus balance of soddy-podzolic soils. Under application of 6, 10 and 15 tons of organic fertilizers per hectare the amount of humus in the soil of field crop and grain-grass rotations increases on the average by 260, 450-520 and 585 kg/ha, respectively, during 1 season. Cultivation of annual crops in field crop rotations without fertilizers is connected with considerable consumption of humus from the arable soil layer, especially under clean-cultivated crops. Consumption of organic matter under 2 grain crops is compensated for by cultivation of clover for 2 yr. To maintain a positive balance of humus in grain-grass crop rotations less organic fertilizers (8-10%) is required than in field crop rotations, all other things being equal.
