Hybrid vigor for yield and its components in okra abelmoschus esculentus

ISSN/ISBN: 0019-5022

The performance of 125 F1 hybrids of A. esculentus (Linn.) Moench obtained by crossing of 25 female lines with 5 pollen parents from genetic stock of diverse origin was examined to estimate the extent of heterosis for 9 characters. Marked heterosis was observed for all the characters except days to flower and fruit width, which showed limited heterosis. The maximum heterosis (71.46%) was for the number of fruits per plant followed by yield per plant (70.28%). Crosses '7114' .times. 'PS', '6301' .times. '6313' and '7114' .times. '6313' showed high heterosis for yield and also most of its components. Generally, parents of different genetic background exhibited high heterotic values.
