ISSN/ISBN: 0006-324X

Hyphessobrycon socolofi sp. nov. collected near Barcelos on the Rio Negro, state of Amazonas, Brazil and H. erythrostigma, collected from the border zone between Peru, Colombia and Brazil, were described. The new species differed from H. erythrostigma in that the adult males had shorter dorsal anal and pelvic fins. Both sexes had a different color pattern in life and in preservative. Males of H. socolofi have numerous small bony hooks in the dorsal and anal fins.
