Identification of delta 5 7 24 methylene sterols and methyl sterols in the brain and whole body of atta cephalotes isthmicola

The principal sterol of both the brain and the whole body of the leaf-cutting ant, A. cephalotes isthmicola, was identified as 24-methylcholesta-5,7,24(28)-trien-3.beta.-ol (7-dehydro-24-methyl-enecholesterol, 5-dehydroepisterol). Smaller amounts of 24.beta.-methylcholesta-5,7-dien-3.beta.-ol (22-dihydroergosterol) and 24.beta.-methylcholesta-5,7,22-trans-trien-3.beta.-ol (ergosterol) were also present, but cholesterol was not detected. This demonstrates that a functional nervous system can exist in the absence of cholesterol.
