Identification of genes for resistance against the causative agent of yellow rust in winter wheat cultivars sown in the north caucasus

Genes for resistance to the causative agent of yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici) were isolated and identified from seedlings of winter wheat cultivars ('Avrora', 'Skorospelka 35', 'Bezostaya 2' and 'Kavkaz') in the northern Caucasus [USSR]. Genetic analyses were performed with F2 hybrid seedlings using 4 rust biotypes of differing virulence. Genes for resistance were identified by analysis of hybrids from diallel crosses of the above cultivars with test cultivars. The studied cultivars each contained 1 dominant gene for resistance which was identical to the known genes yr2 and yr3c. It was effective at all stages of ontogenic development.
