Immunological response of sheep to uv irradiated larvae of ostertagia circumcincta

Immunological response of sheep to uv irradiated larvae of ostertagia circumcincta

Acta Parasitologica Polonica 24(28-34): 323-333

Four month old lambs were immunized with 2 doses of UV-irradiated larvae of O. circumcincta or with 1 dose of normal larvae. Ostertagiosis was less severe in animals infected with UV-irradiated larvae which possessed almost identical antigenic properties as normal larvae. Normal larvae and larvae irradiated for 30 min were able to stimulate the defense mechanisms of the host; irradiation of larvae for 30 min to a large extent eliminated the pathogenicity of the parasite; and at least a proportion of irradiated larvae underwent the full life cycle and stimulated the production of specific antibodies by the host.
