In vitro tryptophan catabolism by trypanosoma brucei gambiense trypanosoma equiperdum trypanosoma lewisi and trypanosoma musculi

A comparative study of in vitro tryptophan catabolism among 4 trypanosome species was made in a continuing effort to determine the functional significance of aromatic acid catabolism to trypanosomes. T. brucei gambiense and T. equiperdum, members of the subgenus Trypanozoon, catabolized tryptophan via an initial aminotransferase reaction to form indole-3-pyruvic acid and the subsequent catabolites indole-3-lactic acid, indole-3-acetic acid and indole-3-ethanol (tryptophol). T. lewisi and T. musculi, members of the subgenus Herpetosoma, catabolized tryptophan similarly, although indole-3-lactic acid was the only end product formed. Conservation of a similar tryptophan catabolic pathway among the 4 trypanosome species suggests that the pathway is functionally important. The different end products formed may reflect the different oxidative metabolic potentials and perhaps even the different pathogenic potentials of the 2 subgenera.
