Alkaline phosphatase activity in cucumber roots increased with Ca deficiency. Acid phosphatase was scarcely affected by the treatment. Re-addition of Ca not only suppressed the continuous increase in alkaline phosphatase activity but also reduced the already formed activity. Alkaline phosphatase activity increased with a deficiency of Ca, P, minor elements and Fe in this order. Either cycloheximide or actinomycin D completely suppressed the increase in the activity caused by Ca deficiency.
