Indicators of anthropogenic eutrophication of lake ladoga ussr

A comparison of the modern state of the planktonic community of Lake Ladoga [USSR] with data from the early 20th century and the 1960's showed that, despite the generally preserved species composition of phyto- and zooplankton, regrouping of dominants occurred and quantitative indexes rose. During mass spring development of Diatomae in the most productive southern and eastern regions of the lake, the quantity and biomass of phytoplankton exceeded 1.5-5 times the maximal deviations from the average level in 1960-1962. The zooplankton density in the upper 5-m layer in all main groups (Crustaceae, Rotatoria and Protozoa) was similar to indexes of mesotrophic water bodies. The chlorophyll content in plankton characterized the lake as mesotrophic.
