Induced variability for poly genic traits in wheat triticum aestivum

'Nadadores 63', a Mexican wheat variety with red grains and late maturity under Indian hill conditions was irradiated with .gamma. rays (30 kR) to produce early and amber grained mutants. Variability for several traits was observed in the progenies of a single plant with amber grains isolated in M1 [1st mutant generation], probably due to reshuffling of modifier complexes. The variability apparently was economically valuable. Three mutant families, M241, M236 and M110, were better than the best available checks in the plains for grain yield. While M241 has attained considerable homozygosity, in other 2 lines can be further improved by selection.
