In the lizard U. hardwicki, glucose loading results in significant hyperglycemia with atrophy of pancreatic islets. Since these lizards regain normoglycemia much later than mammals, they exhibit a lower tolerance to glucose and it is probably related to a comparatively lesser quantity of circulating insulin in them. The selective damage of .beta.-cells in the islet tissue of glucose-injected lizards indicates their functional resemblance with the .beta.-cells of other vertebrates, as the source of insulin. The damage was rarely observed in the .alpha.-cells, which for most of the experimental period remained almost normal. It appears to be secondary to the effects on the .beta.-cells. Excess of glucose in the blood seems to serve as the stimulator for secretion of insulin by the .beta.-cells.
