Inflation of high ranked syntaxa of thermophilous ruderal vegetation

Reasons for inflation of high syntaxonomical units are discussed. One of the reasons, namely inconsistencies in interpretation of history of a unit, is emphasized. The inflation of syntaxonomical units is illustrated using ruderal thermophilous vegetation and the syntaxa described by Elias (1979, 1981, 1982) as a model.
