Influence of 2 seeding dates of lucerne without cover crop and several seeding rates on yield in the year of seeding

Seeding of lucerne with no cover crop on medium to heavy weed infested soils with effective weed control measures (herbicides or control cutting) ensured lucerne stand establishment in the spring. Compared to the average dry matter yield (43.2 quintals/ha), the seeding date variables differed significantly to the advantage of spring seeding. Average seed emergence was 1/3, 1/2 in the wet year (1972) and 1/5 in the dry year (1969). The proportion of weeds was higher in the 1st cutting, in crops seeded in the spring at rates > 10 kg/ha.
