Influence of nitrogen fertilization of nitrate reductase activity and yield of bengal gram cicer arietinum

A pot culture experiment was conducted to study the effect of N applied at the time of sowing and flowering on nitrate reductase activity during grain development and yield of bengal gram. Preliminary studies on nitrate reductase have shown that the activity of the enzyme from the leaves decreased significantly when plants were subjected to water stress. The upper leaves in plant canopy had higher nitrate reductase activity than lower leaves. During grain development, the nitrate reductase enzyme exhibited 2 peaks of activity one after 3 wk and second after 4 wk of flowering. The enzyme activity was higher in plants grown in the presence of 20 or 40 kg N/acre applied at sowing or flowering than control. The application of 20 and 40 kg N/acre as a basal dose increased the grain yield by 24 and 54% over control. An increase in the dose of N from 20 to 40 kg/acre applied at flowering improved grain yield from 39-89% over the control.
