Influence of the second preceding crop and nitrogen fertilization on crop yield yield structure and crude protein content of the spring barley variety salome grown after winter wheat

A long-term crop rotation experiment on the loess (Lo1) site at Bernburg-Strenzfeld was concluded in 1981 and used to demonstrate that it is possible to prove, still in the second year of cultivating the spring barley variety Salome, significant yield effects of the crop rotations with cereal proportions of 50, 75 and 100% and the respective second preceding crops. Fertilizer nitrogen (46 kg N .cntdot. ha-1) had no great influence on these effects. Utilization of the fertilizer nitrogen was strongly reduced due to the preceding long-term cereal growing. Second preceding crops had no significant influence on the crude protein content and the 1000-grain-weight of barley, whilst plant density responded severely.
