The resistance of the wheat cultivars 'Avrora', 'Koncho' .times. Agropyron elongatum, 'Weihenstephaner M1' to race 3 of E. graminis f. sp. tritici is conditioned by the action of different numbers of unidentified genes, localized in various chromosomes. The resistance of 'Avrora' is controlled by 2 genes with an epistatic action, localized in 1A and 3B chromosomes. An inhibiting effect on the action of the main genes is exerted by the chromosomes 7A, 7B, 2D and 5B. The resistance of 'Koncho' .times. A. elongatum is the result of a complementary interaction of 3 recessive genes localized in 5A, 1B and 5D. Their action is reinforced by a modifying effect of the 5B, 6D and 3D chromosomes. Three dominant genes with an additive action, localized in the 1D, 2A and 7D chromosomes, exert an influence on the resistance of 'Weihenstephaner M1'. The chromosomes 4B and 4A have an inhibitory effect. That the genes controlling the resistance of the cultivars to race 3 of E. graminis f. sp. tritici are not identical with the genes known so far suggests that it is introduced by introgression of alien genetic material, from Secale cereale regarding 'Avrora', A. elongatum regarding 'Koncho .times. A. elongatum and from Triticum carthlicum in regard to 'Weihenstephaner M1'.
