Inheritance of certain characters determining the productivity of inter cultivar bean hybrids

The inheritance of stem height, number and weight of pods and seeds per plant, 1000-seed wt, length of pods and number of seeds per pod was studied in the bean cultivar crosses 'No. 1026' .times. 'No. 221', 'No. 3003' .times. No. 564', 'No. 1028' .times. 'Dneprovska bomba' and their reciprocal crosses. Highest heritability coefficients were estimated for weight of seeds per plant, pod length and number of seeds per pod. The heritability coefficients for 1000-seed wt, number and weight of pods per plant were also quite high. Effective selection can therefore be carried out for these characters in F2 and the following generations. Heritability coefficients for number of seeds per plant and for stem height were of lower value. Dominant gene effects were important in the inheritance of stem height, pod and seed number, pod and 1000-seed wt and pod length. Additive gene effects were most pronounced in the inheritance of the character number of seeds per pod. Dominant .times. dominant, additive .times. additive and additive .times. dominant gene interactions also had a share in the inheritance of the named characters.
