Inheritance of heading time tiller number and plant height in 8 wheat triticum aestivum crosses

The inheritance of heading time, plant height and tiller number/plant was studied with parental, F1, F2, F3, B1 and B2 generations of 8 single crosses of wheat (T. aestivum L.). The variations of F2, F3 and backcrosses were significantly greater than the parents and F1S. Nonadditive gene effects were common in all the crosses and characters. Additive-dominance and digenic interaction models were inadequate. Additive gene effects were significant for all the crosses of the characters, whereas dominance effect was significant for tiller number of cross 3 and for plant height of crosses 2 and 3. The epistatic gene effects were highly pronounced in all 8 crosses. Dominance .times. dominance epistasis was more pronounced than additive .times. additive epistasis and the magnitude of the former was also higher than the latter. Duplicate types of epistasis were found in most cases. Significant partial dominance to overdominance was noted in different crosses and generations.
