Inheritance of resistance of rice cultivars to the blast fungus strains virulent for the cultivar reiho

A gene analysis to identify the genes accounting for the moderate resistance of the rice variety Shin 2 and some other varieties to the blast fungus strain Kyu 77-07 A was carried out in the present study. The differential varieties, Aichi Asahi (Pi-a) and Yashiro-mochi (Pi-ta), were found to be susceptible to the strain, while Ishikari Shiroke (Pi-i), Kanto 51 (Pi-k), Tsuyuake (Pi-km), Fukunishiki (Pi-z) and Toride 1 (Pi-zt) were resistant, and Shin 2 (Pi-ks) and Pi No.4 (Pi-ta2) moderately resistant. Therefore, Kyu 77-07A was classified as one of the strains belonging to race 102. However, the variety Reiho with the resistance gene Pi-ta2 was susceptible to this strain. Based on the known facts mentioned above, the objectives of the present study were to determine whether Pi-ks is the gene responsible for the moderate resistance of Shin 2 to Kyu 77-07A along with the reason for the different reactions to Kyu 77-07A between Pi No.4 and Reiho which both have the same resistance gene Pi-ta2. For the gene analysis, the F2 or F3 plants of the crosses were inoculated with Kyu 77-07A and three other fungus strains using the spraying method when the plants were at the four- to five-leaf stage. Two varieties, Mineyutaka and Saikai 155 belonging to the Shin 2 type varieties, were used as the representative parents of the varieties susceptible to Kyu 77-07A for the crosses. The results showed that Shin 2 had a dominant gene for the moderate resistance to Kyu 77-07A. This genes was linked to the gene locus of blast resistance, Pi-t, but was independent of other gene loci of blast resistance, Pi-a, Pi-i, Pi-k, Pi-z, Pi-ta and Pi-b. Therefore, this gene was named Pi-sh. Thus, Shin 2 had two blast resistance genes, Pi-ks and Pi-sh, and only the latter was the gene accounting for the moderate resistance to Kyu 77-07A. The F3 lines from the cross Shin 2/Mineyutaka were inoculated with Kyu 77-07A and two other strains belonging to race 102. Almost all of the F3 lines showed that same reaction to the three strains, and therefore Pi-sh wwas considered to be resistant to these strains. Norin 22 and Nipponbare that were moderately resistant to Kyu 77-07A, like Shin 2, also had the gene Pi-sh. Among other varieties having a known resistance gene, Kusabue (Pi-k), Fukunishiki (Pi-z), Pi No.4 (Pi-ta2) and BL 1 (Pi-b) also had the gene Pi-sh, unlike Aichi Asahi (Pi-a), Ishikari Shiroke (Pi-i), Kanto 51 (Pi-k) and K 59 (Pi-t). Yashiro-mochi (Pi-ta) was not used in the gene analysis, but it was not assumed to have the gene Pi-sh due to its susceptibility to Kyu 77-07A. The difference in the reaction to Kyu 77-07A between Pi No.4 and Reiho was explained by the fact that the former had both the Pi-ta2 and Pi-sh genes while the latter had only Pi-ta2.
