Inheritance of some economic quantitative characters in an intervarietal cross of muskmelon cucumis melo

The inheritance of 7 important economic quantitative characters was studied in cross between 'Hara Madhu' and 'Earligold' in 1972-73. A higher magnitude of variances and transgressive segregation towards a favorable direction indicated better scope of selection for fruit weight, flesh thickness and total yield. The additive component of variance was high for days to opening of the 1st female flower, maturity, fruit number/vine and the total soluble solids; dominance was pronounced for fruit weight, flesh thickness and the total yield. Both heritability and expected genetic advance were greater for fruit number and weight only. In general, additive .times. additive gene effects were more important than additive .times. dominance and dominance .times. dominance except for total yield.
