Inheritance of stem height and spike productivity in intercultivar hybrids of winter fodder barley

An investigation concerning the inheritance of stem height, spike length, number of grains per spike, grain wt/spike, grain wt/plant and 1000-grain wt was made in 3 intercultivar barley crosses-No. 22 .times. M 3383/646, 5K .times. M 3337/268 and Maglon .times. No. 46. Coefficients of heritability (H2, h2), heterosis in F1, BCP1 and BCP2 were estimated. The investigation included P1, P2, F1, F2, BCP1 and BCP2 populations. The backcrosses lead to greater changes in the characters of some populations (spike length, 1000-grain wt, grain weight per plant) bringing them to the level of the more productive parent and creating greater possibilites for selection. Highest coefficient of heritability was estimated for the characters spike length (67.5-92.6%), 1000 grain wt (60.8-94.5%) and stem height (63.4-70.8%). The coefficient of heritability for grain weight per plant was relatively high also (56.3-63.8%). The coefficients of heritability in a narrow sense revealed the important role of additive genes in the inheritance of the characters stem height, spike length and 1000-grain wt. Statistically significant heterosis in relation to the more productive parent was observed in F1 for the characters grain weight in the hybrids No. 22 .times. M 3383/646 and 5K .times. M 3337/268 and for spike length in the hybrids 5K .times. M 3337/268 and Maglon .times. No. 46. This effect was also preserved in the reciprocal crosses.
