Inheritance of wood specific gravity in an unimproved loblolly pine pinus taeda population 20 years of results

In a 20 yr old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) genetic test population, unextracted juvenile wood, unextracted mature wood, and unextracted weighted specific gravity were all under substantial genetic control (h2 = 0.44 for juvenile wood specific gravity and h2 = 0.45 for mature wood and weighted specific gravity). All 3 characteristics were highly genetically correlated (rG .gtoreq. 0.88), indicating that selection for one of these traits will result in a substantial correlated response in the other 2 traits. The heritability of juvenile wood specific gravity observed in 20 yr old trees was similar to that found at age 7 yr in the same population. However, both estimates were lower than the heritability of juvenile wood specific gravity calculated at age 10 yr. Coefficients of genetic prediction relating parental mature wood specific gravity and specific gravities of their progeny were in line with heritability values calculated for the age 7 yr and age 20 yr measurements. The observed heritabilities and variances indicate that substantial genetic gain can be made by selection for wood specific gravity in loblolly pine.
