Inhibition of apple chlorotic leaf spot virus in chenopodium quinoa by ribavirin

Application of 1-.beta.-D-ribofuranosyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole-3-carboxamide (ribavirin) at 250 ppm completely inhibited multiplication of apple chlorotic leaf spot virus in C. quinoa when the material was applied between 2 days before and 8 h after inoculation, but not when application was delayed until the 3rd day after inoculation. Leaf spray, drench and brief sand culture applications were equally effective. Drench applications of solutions with 500 ppm or more of ribavirin resulted in increasingly severe phytotoxicity. The material remains effective in soil and plants for at least 4 days, is absorbed rapidly by roots and foliage, and is easily translocated.
