In a long-term trial with conventional and integrated crop production in South Western Germany, population density and biomass of the dominating earthworm Lumbricus terrestris were about four, respectively five times higher in integrated plots than in conventional ones. The most significant characters of integrated crop production are: using the cultivator instead of plough, reducing pesticides and planting cover-crops and intercrops.
