Interactions between mildew erysiphe graminis f sp hordei and brown leaf rust puccinia hordei on barley under epidemiological aspects

By means of quantitatively variable inoculation methods, interactions between powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei) and brown leaf rust (Puccinia hordei) on barley plants could be detected in early phases of the infection pathway. Primary infections of powdery mildew (density of pustules 10/cm2) 2-6 days before rust inoculation inhibit the development of uredia, high densities of powdery mildew (15-20 pustules/cm2) can almost completely stop their formation. Primary infections with brown rust negatively affect the size of pustules of powdery mildew, at high densities of uredia (144/cm2) they fail to develop. Temperatures of 12-20.degree. C do not have any effects on the type of interactions, with 20.degree. C inhibiting effects are increased. The onset of fructification of rust is delayed by powdery mildew, sporulation time is shortened. Brown rust has negative effects on the sporulation time of powdery mildew only when inoculated simultaneously or the following 2 days. The formation of uredospores per uredium and day and per unit leaf area (cm2) is strongly reduced by primary inoculation with powdery mildew (2-6 days before rust inoculation). Negative effects on the conidia production of powdery mildew occur with simultaneous inoculation of both pathogens and with rust inoculations following 2-4 days after mildew infection. The results are discussed under epidemiological aspects.
