Investigations on the prostaglandin f 2 alpha concentration in maternal and fetal cotyledons of cows with and without retained fetal membranes

Investigations on the prostaglandin f 2 alpha concentration in maternal and fetal cotyledons of cows with and without retained fetal membranes

Zentralblatt fuer Veterinaermedizin Reihe A 27(9-10): 691-696

The PGF2.alpha.[prostaglandin F2.alpha.]-concentrations of cotyledons were studied in 10 cows with retained fetal membranes (RFM) and 6 cows which had non-retained fetal membranes (NRFM). PGF2.alpha. was determined by bioassay. The PGF2.alpha.-concentrations (.mu.g/100 mg DNA) in cotyledons not separated into fetal and maternal parts, in fetal cotyledons and in maternal cotyledons in RFM cows were 129.9 .+-. 73.0 (mean .+-. SE), 251 .+-. 74.4 and 9.38 .+-. 4.8, respecitvely; in NRFM cows the values were 300 .+-. 104.2, 556 .+-. 90.0 and 53.3 .+-. 11.0, respectively (differences between RFM and NRFM P .ltoreq. 0.05 for the non-separated samples and P .ltoreq. 0.01 for fetal and maternal cotyledons). The PGF2.alpha. concentrations in the cotyledons seem directly or indirectly related to the complex of retained fetal membranes in cows.
