Investigations on the reaction of potato varieties with different abilities of nitrogen use 1. effect of nitrogen fertilizing on starch and nitrogen fractions in pot trials

In pot trials using 4 potato varieties.sbd.2 with low and 2 with high ability of N use, the effect of different doses of N on starch content and some N fractions was investigated. The influence of high N doses on starch content is low. Little decrease occurred in some cases. No relation between ability of N use (N intensity) and variety was observed. Total and soluble N content were considerably increased. The main part of the soluble N consisted of amides, especially asparagine. There was no qualitative change in the amino acid patterns of the varieties. The protein N in all cases increased (15-90%). With respect to the ability of N use, the ratio total N/protein N was not influenced in varieties with low N intensity. In those with higher intensity, the ratio increased. Composition of the potato protein and its value were not changed by increased N fertilizing. .gamma.-Aminobutyric acid was found in potato protein.
