Isolation of a radiata pine pinus radiata seed orchard from external pollen

Australian Forest Research 10(1): 83-94

Pollen was trapped within a clonal seed orchard of radiata pine and along a 950-m transect between the orchard and a farm windbreak of the same species. The average pollen catch over 6 sampling dates at a point 33 m outside the orchard was only 10% of that within the orchard, and it was concluded that contamination from the windbreak was not of practical significance. The same conclusion would not apply to a young orchard on the same site. On most days, and for short distances from the windbreak (< 30 m), there was a linear relationship between log pollen density and distance from source. However, this model was quite inadequate for describing dispersion over greater distances, or when wind speed was high. Temperature and relative humidity had a greater effect on the abundance of pollen shed than did wind conditions, but both wind direction and speed influenced the distribution pattern away from the pollen source. Because of the complexity of the factors involved, it is not possible to specify an isolation distance that would be adequate for all weather conditions. Additional practical measures for reducing contamination with external pollen are described.
